Canon Information
Personality:
- Charisma: Hopper is attuned to what makes people tick, and can win them over by being genial, charming, and a good listener. During a conversation he knows how to ask the right questions and get his conversational partner talking about themselves and their own interests, leaving them with a good impression without his needing to put in too much work. That's not to say he doesn't know how to hold his own end of a conversation when needs be. But generally, Hopper keeps the focus of the conversation on the other person, making them feel good that he cares about what they want to talk about.
- Loyalty: Hopper is fiercely protective of the people in his community, especially people he has a previous connection to. He sees himself as better able to handle certain situations than the people around him, especially when dealing with younsters, and will put himself in a position to investigate and intercede in the situation to avoid putting other people in danger.
- Problem-solving: Hopper is able to quickly assess when the details of a situation are not adding up, and work on a solution for investigating further. He uses the skills learned in his position as a law-enforcement officer to determine when someone is lying about a situation and to help him decide how to take further action. Even when this means going up against people who work in federal government, he's willing to take risks in order to work out the real truth.
- Temper: Hopper is quick to show irritation when something unexpectedly disrupts his intended course of action. This sometimes leads to him having an outburst when someone says something to him that's particularly cutting or which could be taken too personally. He's particularly sensitive about remarks about his daughter, who is deceased. If he doesn't choose to react in these situations, he may temporarily remove himself from the situation to calm down.
- Substance abuse: Hopper turns to chemical comforts when life gets stressful, and is seen drinking, taking pills, and smoking to excess. Even after circumstances lead to him choosing to clean up his act with the drinking and druh abuse, he continues to smoke constantly. He even turns to food as a comfort once he has lessened his drinking.
- Rashness: When Hopper comes up with a plan, he tends to act on it immediately without telling anyone else what his hunches are, even when it means he’ll end up speaking with his fists as the first resort. Even if he attempts to bluff with a lie first, a punch to the jaw may not be far behind.
Physical description: Jim is a tall man at 6'2" (188cm), and is not exactly in shape, but he could be described as somewhat burly. He has brown hair that he obviously doesn't get cut that often, and a scruffy beard that is slightly peppered with grey.

Earth AU
Earth AU Age:42
History: Jim Hopper had always wanted to be a cop. He believed in protecting and serving, and keeping the small towns he lived in from being overrun by petty crime and drug use. When he was younger, this meant keeping his hometown of Hawkins, Indiana clean; after he moved to upstate New York after his marriage, he continued this career, even as he and his wife had a little girl who they named Sara. Life was good for the young family—until Sara was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011. Despite all the work of the doctors, and despite her strong will and otherwise good health, Sara eventually succumbed to the disease, in 2015.
Hopper was full of grief. Dying from cancer wasn't supposed to be something that happened anymore. Medical science had advanced so much in the last twenty years—surely the doctors should have been able to find some way to avoid this occurrence. He was so stricken with grief and its component anger that he punched the doctor who had coordinated her treatment. His wife was aghast, but doing something like that was classic Hopper.
His grief and that of his wife disintegrated his marriage. Moving back to Hawkins was the most obvious option at this point, but Hopper had heard so much news coming out of New York City about the 'stop and frisk' program that he felt a good cop like himself was needed there. Surely if there were more good apples in the department, the program would come to an end and the good cops like himself would prevail over the ones who insisted on being racist.
This goal proved to be very short-sighted. The leadership of the police department was full of people who supported 'stop and frisk' and this included the mayor. Discouraged, Hopper began to try to toe the department line, so that he wouldn't lose his job. Eventually, he got to the point where he couldn't stand it anymore and ended up resigning his job. The plan at this point was to move to Hawkins again, but Hopper had been living paycheck-to-paycheck because of his poor habits such as drinking and smoking too much. He ended up being forced to take a job with the city, driving the street sweepers, snowplows, and other equipment that contributed to keeping the city's infrastructure clean. In the end, he found he didn't mind it as much as he was afraid he would when he took the job.
Since acquiring this job in 2019, Hopper ended up curbing his drinking habits to some extent. However, he still smokes like a chimney, which is very expensive in New York City. He has also unfortunately begun using cocaine, which he knows is very 1980s, but it's the drug that gives him the effects he's looking for. He knows that it's quite ironic for a former cop to have turned to illicit drug use. However, he's never really processed Sara's death properly and he really doesn't intend to start now.
Personality: Jim Hopper is very much the same person in this AU as he is in canon. The main differences are that he's more cosmopolitan and more politically liberal. In canon, his political beliefs are not touched upon; however, the early 1980s were early in the Reagan years and it's probable that being a small-town Indiana cop means that Hopper bought into many of his policies, such as trickle-down economics. Because of several little incidences in the show, I've come to see him as one of the people who voted for Reagan despite themselves being more socially liberal (for the times). These people were known as "Reagan Democrats". Because this game takes place in 2020, it shifts his background 37 years into the future. But again, I don't choose to make Hopper a flawless ally to Black people, LGBTQ+ people, and other people who the Democrats fight for equality for. He has a lot to learn and he doesn't understand how some of the efforts he took as a New York City cop may have actually made things worse for the Black people he was trying to advocate for.
This Hopper is also still very much wrapped up in his grief, having not experienced the sort of catharsis that caring for and becoming a guardian to Eleven brought him in canon. For this reason he's a bit more gruff and quick to anger than the man at his canon point, more like the Hopper we see at the beginning of season 1.
