● name: Jim Hopper
● canon: Stranger Things
● canon point: As Eleven attempts to close the gate between the two dimensions
● age: 42-ish
● (canon) background: http://strangerthings.wikia.com/wiki/Jim_Hopper
● abilities:
- Firearms: Hopper has been in the armed forces and worked afterward exclusively in law enforcement, meaning he has been using firearms extensively for his entire adult life.
- Radio: Another legacy of his time in the armed forces, Hopper knows Morse code and is able to teach Eleven to use the radio to signal him in case of emergency.
- CPR: When they find Will Byers in the Upside-Down, Hopper teaches Joyce to perform CPR, remaining calm under pressure.
● strengths:
- Charisma: Hopper is able to gain people's confidence quickly in a social situation, leading to his many short-term romantic liaisons. He tries to rely on this ability to extract information about what Hawkins Lab is doing, with varying degrees of success. However, it’s clear that he knows how to socialize and be friendly with people he has no previous acquaintance with.
- Loyalty: Hopper is fiercely protective of the people in his community, especially people he has a previous connection to, like Joyce Byers. When he becomes better-acquainted with Will's friends and with Eleven, he quickly becomes their advocate in discovering what is going on in their town. He even takes Eleven into hiding after she reappears in the woods, letting her live in his family’s old cabin.
- Problem-solving: Hopper is able to quickly assess when the details of a situation are not adding up, and work on a solution for investigating further. When he notices, for example, that the security tape he's shown of the night Eleven had escaped does not feature a rainstorm, he immediately realizes he's being lied to by the people at the Lab. He's careful to keep his realization to himself, however, until he's able to come up with a plan for action.
● weaknesses:
- Temper: Hopper is quick to show irritation when something unexpectedly disrupts his intended course of action. This is especially true in a situation such as when he discusses Will's disappearance with Will's friends, when multiple people talking and being off-topic lead him to yell at them. He also gets into a terrible argument with Eleven the night of Halloween, when he comes home later than promised, and breaks the television rather than allow her to continue to use it.
- Substance abuse: After Hopper's daughter's death, he turns to alcohol and drugs, in addition to his existing cigarette habit, to cope. Even after the events of the show lead him to clean up his act, he continues to smoke excessively. He also ends up eating more junk food after this, leading to intervention by Flo in an attempt to get him to eat more healthily.
- Rashness: When Hopper comes up with a plan, he tends to act on it immediately without telling anyone else what his hunches are, even when it means he’ll end up speaking with his fists as the first resort. This is perfectly illustrated when he suspects the body of Will Byers is a fake, and he tries to talk the guard into letting him into the morgue. When his bluff fails, he just punches the guard to knock him out instead of trying some other tactic.
