Character Information

Canon:

Hopper's canon includes sci-fi travels to another dimension, monsters, gore, and children put in positions of danger.
In canon, Hopper is a small-town sheriff in Hawkins, Indiana. He's unfortunately prone to substance abuse, including his trademark cigarette smoking. However, when push comes to shove, he's able to give up the worst of it to help the kids in his town.
In canon, Hopper makes an effort to help the victim of the science lab in town, Eleven, who is a young girl who's been exploited for her supernatural powers. This exploitation is so bad that she doesn't even have a name beside the number she was assigned in the lab.

Hopper's helping Eleven helps him process some of the issues surrounding his daughter's death. In his Earth AU, he never had this chance.
Hopper's canon point is at the end of season 2. I despise what they did with his character in season 3 and it actually put me off playing him for a good while. This is why I use this canon point.
Hopper is a bit impulsive and rash, and is willing to take the out of punching someone in the face when things aren't going his way.

Physical:

For Hopper's icons, I use season 1 screenshots from his canon. This is because I never updated his account after season 2 came out. I may do so at some point, but for now that's what we have.
Hopper is a typical man in his 40s—a bit overweight and a little out of shape.
Hopper's worst trait has to be his penchant for substance abuse. This has definitely contributed to his physical condition.

SETTING BACKGROUND

Stranger Things is about 1980s Indiana, in a universe where the small town of Hawkins is headquarters to an experimental lab. In this lab, there are children who are raised to have psychic and other supernatural powers. This is an illegal experiment. One of the children, test subject Eleven, opened a portal to the Upside Down, which is a separate dimension from our regular world. A monster emerged from the Upside Down and terrorized the town, kidnapping or killing citizens from the town. The story of the show deals with how Eleven was found and was able to send the monster back, and eventually close the portal.

PERSONALITY

Charisma: Hopper is attuned to what makes people tick, and can win them over by being genial, charming, and a good listener. During a conversation he knows how to ask the right questions and get his conversational partner talking about themselves and their own interests, leaving them with a good impression without needing to put in too much work. That's not to say he doesn't know how to hold his own end of a conversation when needs be. But generally, Hopper keeps the focus of the conversation on the other person, making them feel good that he cares about what they want to talk about.
Loyalty: Hopper is fiercely protective of the people in his community, especially people he has a previous connection to. He sees himself as better able to handle certain situations than the people around him, especially when dealing with youngsters, and will put himself in a position to investigate and intercede in the situation to avoid putting other people in danger.
Problem-solving: Hopper is able to quickly assess when the details of a situation are not adding up, and work on a solution for investigating further. He uses the skills learned in his position as a law-enforcement officer to determine when someone is lying about a situation and to help him decide how to take further action. Even when this means going up against people who work in federal government, he's willing to take risks in order to work out the real truth.

Temper: Hopper is quick to show irritation when something unexpectedly disrupts his intended course of action. This sometimes leads to him having an outburst when someone says something to him that's particularly cutting or which could be taken too personally. He's particularly sensitive about remarks about his daughter, who is deceased. If he doesn't choose to react in these situations, he may temporarily remove himself from the situation to calm down.
Substance abuse: Hopper turns to chemical comforts when life gets stressful, and is seen drinking, taking pills, and smoking to excess. Even after circumstances lead to him choosing to clean up his act with the drinking and drug abuse, he continues to smoke constantly. He even turns to food as a comfort once he has lessened his drinking.
Rashness: When Hopper comes up with a plan, he tends to act on it immediately without telling anyone else what his hunches are, even when it means he’ll end up speaking with his fists as the first resort. Even if he attempts to bluff with a lie first, a punch to the jaw may not be far behind.

Weapons: Hopper is a policeman who is skilled at shooting a gun. This translates to having good aim, even when using other projectile weapons.
CQC: Hopper is a strong fighter, able to take down a person of similar size.
Charisma: Hopper is good at knowing what makes people tick, and although sometimes he can be impatient, he can use this charisma to help him get people to talk.

Backtagging: I prefer to play out what I can of a thread in a fairly timely manner. If it's looking like what is happening between our characters is going to have a major impact on their CR longterm, I'll keep backtagging for some months, but for the most part if it's beyond the current plot and it's not going much of anywhere I'm liable to lose interest.

Threadhopping: I'm all for this in network posts as long as things are open (i.e. there's no indication the transmission is private). For logs, I'd like to be advised you're going to do this, but will most likely be open to it.
